Decide which Goods and/or Services you wish to Protect
Prior to filing an application, you must decide the type(s) of goods and/or services for which you wish to claim exclusive rights in your trade mark
Registered trade marks cover specific categories of goods and services, which are known as “classes”. There are 45 classes covering different goods and services (34 product classes and 11 service classes). Examples of the way goods and services are classified are available on the UK Intellectual Property Office’s website, here.
You will need to determine into which classes the goods and/or services you have chosen should be classified. The greater the number of classes covered by a trade mark application, the greater the scope of goods and services protected will be (albeit, that the costs of the application will increase as the number of classes increases).
